Does any of this sound familiar?
- Stiff, achy joints when you get out of bed.
- Fingers, knees or shoulders that feel older than you are.
- Aches that seem to have arrived with your hot flushes.
- You're not sure which supplements are worth it.
- You've been told it's "just your age".
You're not imagining it. Muscle and joint aches are among the most common menopause changes, and there's a lot you can do. This guide explains what may be going on, in plain English.
Joint pain and menopause: what may be happening
You're not imagining it.
Postmenopausal women are about 1.5 times more likely to have moderate-to-severe muscle and joint pain than premenopausal women (2020 meta-analysis).
It's common, and sometimes severe.
A 2024 review in the journal Climacteric found most women report muscle and joint aches around menopause, and about 25% experience severe or disabling symptoms.
Oestrogen and inflammation.
Researchers think falling oestrogen may let inflammatory signals called cytokines rise, which may help explain why joints can feel different in midlife.
In the US WHI oestrogen-alone trial (about 10,700 women), joint pain after three years was reported by 80% of the placebo group and 74% of the oestrogen group. HRT is an option to discuss with your GP, not a stand-alone joint treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a printed book or a download?
It's an instant PDF download, ready to read on your tablet or computer, or to print. Nothing arrives by post. Best viewed on a tablet. You'll get the guide and your bonus cheat sheet straight after you buy.
Will this guide fix my joint pain?
No guide can promise that, and we won't. It explains what may be going on in midlife, the everyday food and movement habits to try, and the options to discuss with your GP, pharmacist or physio.
Does it recommend supplements?
It explains what the studies on boswellia, curcumin, ginger and other supplements actually used, and how strong the evidence is (mostly from osteoarthritis studies). It doesn't recommend a dose. Check with your GP or pharmacist first, especially if you take blood thinners or other medicines, are having surgery, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Does it cover HRT?
Yes. It explains what the research shows about HRT and joint pain, as an option to discuss with your GP or a menopause specialist. Never start, stop or change a medicine without talking to your GP or pharmacist.
When should I get help?
Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if a joint is hot, red and swollen, or you have joint pain and feel hot or shivery or generally unwell. These can be signs of an infection.
Go to A&E if you've injured a joint and it's very painful, you can't move it, it has changed shape, or you heard a snap or pop at the time.
See a GP if your joints are painful, swollen and stiff, especially in your hands or feet and for more than 30 minutes in the morning, as this can be a sign of rheumatoid arthritis. Source: NHS. The guide has a red-flag box in Chapter 1.
Do I need any Unshrunk products to use the guide?
No. Everything in the guide works on its own. Chapter 11 includes an optional Misting Moment with one of our magnesium body mists, Revitalise Pro or its new sister mist Ease Hero, which our Unshrinkables love as part of their wind-down. Use it on everyday skin only, never on or near intimate areas or broken skin. It's a self-care ritual, not a treatment for arthritis, so keep following your GP's advice on any medicines.
Is this medical advice?
No. It's educational information, written in plain English. Always speak to a qualified healthcare professional before starting, stopping or changing any medicine, supplement or treatment, including HRT.
