Does any of this sound familiar?
- A burning or electric zing that runs from your buttock down the back of one leg.
- Pins and needles or numbness creeping down towards your foot.
- Your back seizes up after sitting at your desk or in the car.
- Broken nights because you just can't get comfortable.
- You've been told it's "just your age".
You're not imagining it, and you haven't failed at fitness. Back pain gets more common through the menopause transition, and researchers think falling oestrogen may play a part alongside your discs, muscles, sleep and the way you move. This guide explains what may be going on, in plain English.
Sciatica and menopause: what may be happening
Your discs are living tissue.
Their gel centre and tough outer ring contain oestrogen receptors. Lab and animal studies suggest oestrogen helps discs hold on to water; in women, scan studies are still working out the link.
Back pain gets more common.
In an Australian study that followed women for eight years, reports of back pain rose from 44% to 59% as most moved from premenopause to postmenopause (Climacteric, 2008).
Pain can feel louder.
Research suggests falling oestrogen may turn up the volume on pain signals. Poor sleep and stress turn the dial too, which is why a whole-person plan makes sense.
A Chinese MRI study of 1,566 women and 1,382 men found more lumbar disc degeneration after menopause than in men of the same age (Menopause, 2017). The science is still emerging, so the guide treats hormones as "likely plays a part", not "proven cause".

Frequently asked questions
Is this a printed book or a download?
It's an instant PDF download. You'll get the guide and your Fuel Your Spine bonus cheat sheet straight after you buy, ready to read on your tablet or computer, or to print. Best viewed on a tablet.
Will this guide fix my sciatica?
No guide can promise that, and we won't. The NHS says sciatica usually improves within a few weeks to a few months. This guide explains what may be going on in midlife, the gentle, active approach that NICE puts at the heart of care, and the questions to take to your GP or physio.
Does it cover HRT and medicines?
Yes. It explains why studies on HRT and back pain point in different directions, and summarises what NICE's guideline on low back pain and sciatica (NG59) says about common treatments. It doesn't recommend any medicine. Never start, stop or change a medicine without talking to your GP or pharmacist.
I have osteoporosis or low bone density. Is the guide still for me?
Yes. Chapter 9 includes bone-smart tweaks based on Royal Osteoporosis Society advice, such as going easy on loaded forward bending. If you have osteoporosis, or a move sends pain down your leg, check with a physio before you start.
When should I get help straight away?
Call 999 or go to A&E if you have: sciatica on both sides; severe or worsening weakness or numbness in both legs; numbness around your genitals or bottom; problems peeing or pooing; or changes in sexual sensation or function. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome. Don't wait, and don't drive yourself.
Get an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if you have: weakness or "foot drop" in one leg; pain that is severe and sudden, or keeps getting worse; a high temperature, or you feel hot, shivery or unwell; unexplained weight loss; or a history of cancer. The full list is on page 31 of the guide.
Do I need any Unshrunk products to use the guide?
No. Everything in the guide works on its own. Chapter 11 includes an optional evening ritual with one of our magnesium body mists, Revitalise Pro or its new sister mist Ease Hero, which our Unshrinkables love as part of their wind-down. It's a self-care ritual, not a medical treatment, so keep following your GP's advice on any medicines.
Is this medical advice?
No. It's educational information, written in plain English. Always speak to a qualified healthcare professional before starting, stopping or changing any medicine, supplement or treatment, including HRT.
