Does any of this sound familiar?

  • An urge to move your legs the moment you sit or lie down.
  • Creeping, crawling or fizzing feelings that ease when you move.
  • Worse in the evening and at night.
  • Pacing the landing at midnight while everyone else sleeps.
  • You've been told it's "just stress".

You're not imagining it, and you're not on your own. Restless legs are common in midlife, and iron, sleep and hormone changes may all play a part. This guide explains what may be going on, in plain English.

Restless legs and menopause: what may be happening

  • Iron is a key suspect.

Low iron stores are linked with RLS. UK guidance for GPs suggests checking ferritin, and iron may be considered if it's below 75 µg/L. Don't start iron tablets without a blood test.

  • Hormones may play a part.

Small sleep-lab studies suggest oestrogen therapy may reduce leg movements during sleep in postmenopausal women. It's an option to discuss with your GP, not a cure.

  • Treatment advice has moved on.

Recent US guidance (AASM 2024) moved away from older dopamine-type medicines as the first choice, because they can make RLS worse over time. UK practice can differ, so ask your GP.

RLS is diagnosed from your symptoms: an urge to move, worse at rest, eased by movement and worse in the evening. The guide explains each feature and the questions to take to your GP.

What's inside the guide

Eight chapters in four parts:

  • What's really going on:
    • the nightly jitters and the diagnostic "URGE" test (Ch 1)
    • the neuro-hormonal link, and the three hormonal ringleaders (Ch 2)
  • Iron, sleep & the night shift:
    • the iron secret and the ferritin gap between "normal" and what to ask about (Ch 3)
    • the sleep saboteurs: hot flushes, leg movements in sleep and sleep apnoea (Ch 4)
  • Treatment, updated:
    • why an older RLS prescription may be out of date, and the signs of augmentation to watch for (Ch 5)
    • the evening routine: walking, warmth, an honest magnesium page and your Misting Moment (Ch 6)
    • does HRT help my legs? (Ch 7)
  • Your action plan:

Track, Test, Cleanse, Calm: a step-by-step plan, a GP script, questions to ask, a 14-day symptom diary and a glossary (Ch 8).

Bonus included: your RLS diary & GP checklist

A 4-page printable to help you prepare for your appointment. It helps you prepare; it doesn't replace advice from your GP or pharmacist.

  • Your GP Blood Test Checklist.
    • Ferritin, iron saturation, B12, vitamin D and more, with typical ranges and what to ask about.
  • Your 2-Week RLS Symptom Diary.
    • Log when it starts, how it feels, hot flushes, triggers and what helped.
  • Your GP Script and Medication Audit.
    • What to say, and which medicines to ask your GP to review. Never start, stop or change a medicine without talking to your GP or pharmacist.

A letter from Lulu & Marva

If your legs come alive the moment your head hits the pillow, you deserve more than "it's just stress". There are real questions to ask and real options to discuss.

Who this guide is for

  • Women in perimenopause or postmenopause with restless, twitchy or uncomfortable legs at night
  • Women who want to understand the iron and ferritin question before seeing their GP
  • Women on an older RLS medicine who want to ask about a review
  • Women who like plain-English science with practical steps

Not for: diagnosis or a treatment plan. This guide helps you have a better conversation with your GP; it doesn't replace them.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a printed book or a download?

It's an instant PDF download, ready to read on your tablet or computer, or to print. Nothing arrives by post. Best viewed on a tablet. You'll get the guide and your bonus diary and GP checklist straight after you buy.

Will this guide cure my restless legs?

No guide can promise that, and we won't. It explains what may be going on in midlife, the questions to ask about iron and your medicines, and the evening habits to try, so you can make a plan with your GP.

Does it cover medicines and HRT?

Yes. It explains, in plain English, what recent guidance says about RLS medicines and augmentation, and what the research says about HRT. It doesn't recommend any medicine or dose. Never start, stop or change a medicine without talking to your GP or pharmacist.

Should I start iron or magnesium?

Not without checking first. Don't start iron tablets without a blood test, and check with your GP or pharmacist before any supplement, especially if you take other medicines or have kidney problems. The research on magnesium for RLS is limited and mixed.

When should I see a GP?

See a GP if you have restless legs symptoms regularly, or they're affecting your sleep or daily life. Your GP can check for causes such as low iron and review any medicines that might make symptoms worse. Source: NHS.

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine without talking to your GP or pharmacist first.

Do I need any Unshrunk products to use the guide?

No. Everything in the guide works on its own. Chapter 6 includes an optional Misting Moment with one of our magnesium body mists, which our Unshrinkables love as part of their wind-down. Use it on everyday skin only, never on or near intimate areas or broken skin. It's a self-care ritual, not a treatment for RLS, so keep following your GP's advice on any medicines.

Is this medical advice?

No. It's educational information, written in plain English. Always speak to a qualified healthcare professional before starting, stopping or changing any medicine, supplement or treatment, including HRT.
